Male Infertility

Human wants to reproduce and continue his bloodline by his nature; he dreams about having children, discovering the meaning of family and enhancing his happiness. Married couples are fascinated by that special day in which they will take their children to their lap. While the couples who have children multiply their happiness, the ones who can’t have children are buried in profound misery.

First of all, I’d like to emphasize that the causes of infertility that are determined, can be treated to a very large extent. Infertility is not a condition that is special to only women or men. The Couples who have the doubt of infertility need to consult the specialist doctors immediately and, if necessary, they need to evaluate their treatment options.

What is infertility?

Infertility i.e. sterility can be defined as a failure of pregnancy despite the unprotected sexual intercourse for 1 year and it is widely observed in the society. One out of every five couples can’t have children due to male infertility.

What are the Causes of Male Infertility?

Male infertility occurs as a result of the decrease or stop of the sperm production or the embolization of channels that allows the sperm flow into the menin. When considered in this context it may be assumed that;

  • Infections that reduce the quality of sperm and that cause embolization of the channels that allow the transfer of the sperms to the tubes,
  • Retrograde ejaculation that occurs as a result of diabetes, spinal cord injuries, medications, and intra-abdominal operations and described as ejaculation of the semen inside the drainage bag during orgasm,
  • The blockage of sperm production by the immune system,
  • Benign or malignant tumors that disrupt hormone balance,
  • Undescended testicle problem not treated on time,
  • Hormonal problems,
  • Obstruction or non-development of the tubes that carry sperms due to previous surgeries, accidents, infections, cystic fibrosis or genetic factors,
  • Sexual problems such as Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation or abnormal development of the position of urinary meatus (hypospadias)
  • Reduced sperm quality and mobility as a result of the regular exposure of the testicles to extreme temperatures,
  • Alcohol, smoking and drug addiction,
  • Emotional stress that effects on hormone balance and
  • Obesity cause infertility.

In addition to all these elements that may cause male infertility; I’d like to indicate that Varicocele is the most common one among the detected causes of male infertility. I suggest the couples, who can’t have children in opposition to their desire to get medical support as soon as possible by reminding that the detectable causes of infertility can be easily revealed.

What is Varicocele?

The varicocele which is among the most common causes of male infertility that can be detected and reversed; is a vascular disease that causes accumulation of excess blood in the ovaries as a result of the enlargement of the veins around the ovary. As a result of the excess blood accumulated in the ovaries, the temperature of the testes, which is normally around 34.5 ° C starts to increase. Due to vasodilatation, excess blood does not only increase the temperature of the testes but also allows a higher quantity of harmful agents to reach the testes than usual due to reverse blood flow (reflux flow). The quality, quantity and mobility of sperms decrease due to the increase in temperature and reaching of more harmful agents to the testicles. Varicocele can be reversed with surgical treatments even though it is a disease directly related to male infertility.
